Being the true you

There is nothing wrong with being different, being unique, in fact it’s one of the highest qualities you can have. Think of anyone you know who you think is awesome. Why are they awesome? What is it that sets them aside from the rest? Whatever it is, it’s different, it’s unique. They are being their true-selves.

For me, my brother is a shining example. Since he was young he has always had the confidence to be different, he has this amazing ability to light up the room and become the life and soul of the party. It’s as if he has no sense of shame or embarrassment, if he wants to do something, he doesn’t think or care about how other people will see it, he cares about how he feels about it. It’s funny how people show their jealousy of it. His head of year at school once said he could do with having a sense of shame sometimes because she saw it as a lack of self-respect. I see it as the highest degree of self-respect to care about what you want and what you feel.

I saw a video the other day of Jim Carey speaking at a graduation. It’s a very inspirational speech and I took a lot away from it. The full video is here if anyone wants to see it. There is one quote however which really rings true to this topic however.

To find real peace, you have to let the armour go. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory. – Jim Carey

Here’s to being different.

Here’s to being unique.

Here’s to being the true you.
